On The Go: NAAFA Releases New Travel Brochure for People of Size

With the summer travel months approaching, traveling can be an intimidating task, particuarly for people of size who have to fly to their desired destination. Today, the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) released a new brochure entitled "Travel Tips for People of Size". In conjunction with the Association for Airline Passenger Rights (AAPR), a nonprofit organization, founded in 2009, whose mission is to promote fairer customer service and accessibility standards in the airline industry and to improve passenger satisfaction, the brochure includes tips on selecting and booking the best flight for you, packing tips, and suggestions for your airport experience. NAAFA has also included a section especially for travel agents as well as a list of airlines, a brief description of each airline’s policy regarding passengers of size along with a link to their webpage that covers this subject.

You can flip through the brochure, which is posted below, or you can click here to review and download the brochure now. For more information on the NAAFA, please visit http://www.naafa.org/.

On The Go: Beauty Travel Tips with Toccara

Model Toccara Jones recently offered her personal travel tips to stay beautiful this summer in an interview:

1. Drink plenty of water. It’s amazing! Planes will dry your skin out. I am traveling at least three times a week, and I can tell when I don’t drink enough water because my skin will get dry.

2. Wash your face, and take care of your skin. I love Neutrogena makeup wipes. It makes your skin feel good, and other brands don’t really take your makeup off as well. I also try to steam my face whenever I can, even in my hotel rooms.

3. Wear lashes. I love me some lashes! Even if you don’t have time to do your whole face, ladies, learn how to put those strips on! That glue can be dangerous for your eyes, so I prefer to put on the strip. Brows make the face too. I mostly keep a natural face when I travel though.

4. Keep hairpins on you. You never know when you’ll need to pin your hair up. They’ll come in handy, you can use them as paper clips, or to keep your shirt closed… It has multiple uses! [laughs] You’ll be MacGyver with those.

5. Wear brighter lipsticks. It makes your teeth look whiter. I’m a Chapstick girl [for moisturizing], and I’m so into my lipstick. It’s grown and sexy. Gloss can be messy when you’re meeting and greeting people, cheek kisses and all that.

6. Keep your nails natural. Fingernails are very time consuming, so I think the smart thing to do would be to go more natural when you’re on the move. If I could, I would keep my natural nails and file them instead of wearing nail tips and dealing with fillings. They can crack, and I have to deal with getting them done every two weeks.

7. Wear a good foundation under your clothing. Proper undergarments, slips and so on make anyone of any size look fabulous no matter what you wear.

On The Go: BlackAtlas.com

On October 15, 2009, American Airlines launches BlackAtlas.com, a social media website that "offers travel insights from an African American perspective". Featuring video blogs from journalist Nelson George as their new "Traveler At Large", the site boasts of being the "premiere online destination for the African-American traveler."

Reviews of the website are mixed. Travel bloggers, like Steven Frischling of BoardingArea.com's Flying with Fish, do not see the need for the division:

"From the outset American Airlines’ Black Atlas social media site appears to play on certain stereotypical aspects of its targeted audience. The opening page of the pre-launch asks announces the new portal as “Your Passport to the Black Experience“ and asks, “Do you know where to find blues music in Moscow? How about a Jamaican restaurant in Milan? If you do, I want to know about it.” Delving deeper into American Airlines’ Black Atlas site, under the seven individual of categories of interest, along with Travel Tips, Restaurants, Arts & Museums there is also a listing for “Beauty & Barber Shops.”"

Critiques of the site say that most travelers, regardless of race, use travel as a reason to explore different culture, not seek out interpretations of their own. Check out this clip from the Launch Party and be your own judge. Would you check out BlackAtlas.com before taking your next vacation?

On The Go: 5 Ways To Stretch Your Travel Budget

Travel Tips - 5 Ways To Stretch Your Travel Budget

The economic stimulus package set to reach 130 million households this spring may cause a surge in travelers looking for fun ways to spend their money. If you're one of them, make the most of your money by considering destinations offering the most bang for your buck. Following are travel tips for those seeking an escape on a tight budget:

1. Think seasonal. An effective strategy for stretching your travel dollar is to keep an eye on high-season versus low-season rates. For example, with warmer weather in the spring and summer, we tend to forget about the popular wintertime vacation spots like Mexico. Traveling to the beach between April and June provides an ideal time to take advantage of the off-season rates.

2. Think quiet. Another travel tip for the budget-minded is to consider destinations that are hot spots in the wintertime yet slow down to an easy going speed as the weather warms up, such as Lake Tahoe and Jackson Hole. These well-known ski areas offer an abundance of outdoor activities once the snow melts. You'll find hiking, biking, fishing and more without contending with the ski season crowd.

3. Think local. The hefty price per gallon of gas may create a barrier when considering a road trip, but short road trips can offer an affordable travel alternative. Consider checking out an area within a few hours drive that is known for a particular attraction, or head off the beaten path and try some camping, or head to a spa for a weekend of relaxation.

4. Think global. Wait a minute. Did we just move from thinking locally to thinking globally? Yes, international travel is not top-of-mind for a lot of U.S. citizens for a host of reasons, one being the struggling U.S. dollar. It hurts to think of exchanging a dollar bill in Europe only to receive half the value back in Euros. One way to avoid the exchange rate is to consider a European cruise since most travel costs are purchased in U.S. dollars up-front, thus minimizing the exchange rate loss.

5. Think out-of-the-box. Instead of spending hours in front of your computer drooling over exotic photos of that fancy Hawaiian resort only to want to vomit at the site of the hotel rates, consider alternative lodging options. For instance, check out rentals - whether it be a house, condo or an apartment. Spending less on lodging may mean you could stay longer...hmmm...Also, check airfare costs for varying routes that will get you to your desired destination. Instead of flying direct, you may find that booking two separate flights to reach your travel destination will save a lot of money.

I'm done thinking! I don't travel often. I want what I want. I don't want to skimp, but I have a budget to keep in mind. What to do? Find what you want and book it - you may just have to stay for a shorter amount of time to stay within your budget.
