Keep It Moving: Changing Minds (and bodies) at Plus Size Fitness

A new boot camp and fitness regime targeting the plus-size community gets an overwhelmingly popular response in Vancouver

Amanda Leith has been on one fitness program after another: "I'm always the last. I'm always the fattest. I always dread having to go back."

This time, she thinks it's going to be different, despite the torrential downpour that's materialized to rain on her enthusiasm.

Ms. Leith is one of a dozen people defying the weather to try Plus Size Fitness, a new program that's trying to break down some of the social and psychological barriers to exercise. Run by Body Exchange Health and Fitness in Vancouver, this is a boot camp that embraces the unfit, the overweight and the exercise-shy. The object is to get people healthier, feeling better about themselves and less self-conscious about working out.

Louise Green, fitness trainer and owner of Body Exchange, thinks plus-size people are left out of Vancouver's exercise culture.

"This is a really active city," she says. "I don't think it is considered very acceptable to be plus size here."

Now a healthy and fit size 16, Ms. Green says she spent her whole life struggling with feeling heavy and out of shape. Going to the gym simply compounded her discomfort until she found a personal trainer who treated her as a person, not a paycheque.

"I got so tired of feeling bad about being big," she explains. "I knew that when I exercised I instantly felt better about myself. I just needed to do it in an atmosphere that didn't bring my morale down."

Encouraged by how good she was feeling about herself, and suddenly evangelical about exercise, she decided to train as a fitness instructor. In March, she registered Body Exchange and set about researching her target market. But she wasn't prepared for the level of interest she received right across the region. She had offers from people wanting to run franchises before her first class signed up. A second boot camp will start July 7.

Realizing she had found a niche market, Ms. Green started looking for help. But finding plus-sized fitness instructors proved difficult.

"I posted they should be size 10 or over - I was trying to be realistic - but then this long, lanky, beautiful plus-size model showed up, and I decided it wasn't going to work."

She turned instead to Amanda Nichol, her own personal trainer, who she says changed her life. Ms. Nichol is assisting in the programs and will probably run the second boot camp once it's off the ground.

"If it weren't for Amanda," said Ms. Green, "I wouldn't have gone into the fitness industry at all."

Back at the rain-swept high-school playing field, Ms. Leith and the other participants are valiantly pushing up their heart rates. All the exercises are offered in different levels of difficulty, allowing members to set their own comfort level. Ms. Leith is relieved. "For once, I don't feel as though I'm going to die.

"The Go-Gos are belting out We Got the Beat from Ms. Green's stereo as the exercisers make their way through squats, skipping and steps. "That's the biggest bang for your buck," she says, while demonstrating how to do an effective lunge.

"It'll be Daisy Dukes next week."Knowing that the challenge at this end of the fitness scale is making sure that members stay with the program, she says the key is keeping everyone's spirits up. "We've got them here; we have to make it as fun as possible," she says.

"Exercise probably isn't something they naturally enjoy, and I don't want anyone to leave feeling defeated.""Let's go out with a bang! Pick up the pace," she shouts, as the group speed-walk widths of the gravel school soccer pitch, high-fiving each other as they pass. Some start running, bending down to touch the ground at the end of each width. Despite the enthusiasm, Ms. Green wants the program to be a gradual introduction to exercise.

"Those of us with weight issues tend to be all-or-nothing people," she explains. "We overeat; we crash diet. We do no physical activity; we hit the gym five nights a week. And then we drop out.

"Fees are low - the boot camp works out to $15 a session - because she's working with a demographic unused to paying for fitness. Right now, everyone seems to be having a good time. They're in a circle, arms stretched forward, marching in and out. "Imagine you're pushing a shopping cart," suggests Ms. Green, walking forward. "Should I buy it?" She walks back again, shaking her head: "No, I shouldn't."

Ms. Leith is in no such quandary. After two sessions, she signs up for both the boot camp and a running program. "It feels like Louise and Amanda really care - they're in your corner," she says. "If you don't show up, they are going to call you and check you're okay and keep you motivated. I'm always doubtful about these things - usually I won't keep going. But this time feels different. There's great camaraderie - and it doesn't feel like a chore."

The Scene: Beautiful is Beautiful

Editor's Note: Now that Vogue Italia has released the 1st ever Vogue featuring all Black models, do you think there will be a day where we see all plus models in a mainstream print fashion mag? -- Ms. Aja B.

Conspicuous by Their Presence
By CATHY HORYN

Racial prejudice in the fashion industry has long persisted because of tokenism and lookism. “We already have our black girl,” says a designer to a fashion-show casting agent, declining to see others. Or: “She doesn’t have the right look.” Laziness, paranoia and pedantry may also have something to do with the failure to hire black models for shows and magazine features in any meaningful number, but, hey, that’s just a guess.

A decade ago the thing to deplore was the stereotyping of black models by dressing them in African-inspired clothes (or the Asian girls in kimonos). This at least gave work to minority models, but it also encouraged a Western view of African culture of the many-bangles-many-beads variety.

O.K., so fashion ain’t deep. It looks into a mirror and sees ... itself. The irony in fashion is that it loves change but it can’t actually change anything. It can only reflect a change in the air. But what changes fashion? What would finally move American designers to include more black models on their runways? That 30 percent of the country is nonwhite? That black women spend $20 billion a year on clothes? That an African-American is the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic Party?

The answer is the individual eye.

In fashion, one of the most influential eyes belongs to the photographer Steven Meisel. His pictures have caught an America basking in the earnest, self-reflected glow of celebrity and money. He has taken innumerable risks, especially with “Sex,” the 1992 volume he did with Madonna, that have paid off with a career that allows him to do whatever he wants.

And he has almost lovingly photographed some of the world’s beautiful women, tapping into their psyches, connecting with them on a human level, while transforming them into fashion deities. As the model Veronica Webb, who first worked with Mr. Meisel 20 years ago, said: “Steven knows every single tic, every talent that every girl has. He just pulls it out of them.”

For the July issue of Italian Vogue, Mr. Meisel has photographed only black models. In a reverse of the general pattern of fashion magazines, all the faces are black, and all the feature topics are related to black women in the arts and entertainment. Mr. Meisel was given roughly 100 pages for his pictures. The issue will be on European newsstands next Thursday and in the United States soon after.

The Scene: Jennifer Hudson in "Spotlight" with New Single

Jennifer Hudson in "Spotlight" with new single

By Mariel Concepcion
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Jennifer Hudson may have taken longer than fans wished before officially announcing the September 30 release of her self-titled debut album. But early signs indicate it might've been worth the wait.

The 26-year-old Chicago native won the Academy Award last year for her supporting turn in the musical "Dreamgirls, " three years after being voted off "American Idol."The lead single from her Arista album, "Spotlight," is currently No. 51 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, two weeks after debuting at No. 99. It was written by rapper Ne-Yo, and produced by Stargate, the moniker used by Norwegian producers Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen.

Ne-Yo notes there were challenges in choosing the first single, but says he's "really, really proud" that his song was picked for the job."They were really trying to figure out where to take her," he says. "The main issue with Jennifer Hudson is her voice is so huge, so how do you take that and radio-ize it, make it radio-friendly? She can't do ("And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls" ) every song because you'll eventually be tired of it. So ("Spotlight" ) is kind of a classy midtempo, and I hope and pray it does well because Jennifer is an amazing talent."

According to Arista senior VP of marketing and artist development Scott Seviour, the track is intended to not only tide fans over until the fall album release but capitalize on Hudson's role in the "Sex and the City" film, which opened in the top spot at the North American box office last weekend with sales of $57 million. The soundtrack, with the Hudson track "All Dressed in Love," debuted this week at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

Aside from having been on a radio promotional tour since the beginning of May, Hudson will star in and campaign for the movie "The Secret Lives of Bees," set to hit theaters in October. "She has some stuff to do for the movie in June, so that keeps her in the public eye," Seviour says.In addition, "Spotlight" will be made available digitally June 10, and multiple remixes of the track will be serviced to the Internet and radio. July and August will be reserved for additional radio and TV appearances. While a follow-up hasn't been chosen, some tracks in contention are the Timbaland-produced "Pocketbook" featuring Ludacris and "Can't Stop the Rain," also written by Ne-Yo.

Additional contributors to the album include Robin Thicke, the Underdogs, Diane Warren, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Jack Splash. R. Kelly and Akon are expected to contribute as well.

Money Matters: Is Your Money Leaking?

Is Your Money Leaking?
By Diane Palmer

Does your budget have leaks?.. or would you rather not think about it.

Most people don't realize how much money actually slips through their fingers in an average week. We are all working hard, trying to get somewhere and make a nice life, and in doing so, we don't pay much attention to the nickels, dimes, quarters and more that are slipping through our hands every day.

You know the scenario, you basically get out of bed running before your feet hit the floor, and the change you plop down on the counter for that coffee you need to keep you going, doesn't seem that big a price to pay, nor the vending machine in the afternoon at work, because you are tired, nor does the takeout pizza on the way home since you are too tired to make dinner. But it DOES matter.

Stop, for a few minutes and actually think about it. I am not suggesting that your life should consist of work and sleep and no fun, but if you could save even just a few dollars during the week, you would have that much more for the fun stuff on the weekends or weeknights, and even save some along the way.

A friend of mine told me, that she barely had enough money for her car payment, and yet she made good money. Other people in her pay range were doing not too bad, and yet she was having trouble. She figured she would turn her heat way down, and eat less food in order to save money. But in reality, she was a hard working woman, who put in many hours and just didn't pay attention to the money she was spending in order to do those long days at work.

We actually sat down, and went through her average week day, and found that she stopped for a latte and natural muffin on the way to work. Cost $3.50. At lunch she visited the deli with other co-workers and spent $10.00 dollars on a vegetarian lunch. In the afternoon, she felt the slump, and would get a coffee and a chocolate bar from the vending machine, cost $4.00. On the way home, she always picked up the latest rag magazines (which she never had time to read, it was just habit) at a cost of $5.00.

So, in the course of one day, she was spending $22.50! In five days, that is $112.50! Times that by four, and there was her car payment. I could see her eyes widening every time we added a new expense. She just didn't realize, her head was elsewhere and these were habits. She pulled money out of the cash machines and spent it.

Now, she gets up a bit early, puts on a pot of coffee, makes her lunch and snacks, but still buys her rag magazines, as this is a treat she really wants. She still saves a lot of money. I am not suggesting we all spend our cash like that. But really look at your daily habits and the spending, and see if you can cut something and you will be in control, and plugging the leaks in your budget, so it can be used for more fun stuff!

On The Go: 5 Ways To Stretch Your Travel Budget

Travel Tips - 5 Ways To Stretch Your Travel Budget

The economic stimulus package set to reach 130 million households this spring may cause a surge in travelers looking for fun ways to spend their money. If you're one of them, make the most of your money by considering destinations offering the most bang for your buck. Following are travel tips for those seeking an escape on a tight budget:

1. Think seasonal. An effective strategy for stretching your travel dollar is to keep an eye on high-season versus low-season rates. For example, with warmer weather in the spring and summer, we tend to forget about the popular wintertime vacation spots like Mexico. Traveling to the beach between April and June provides an ideal time to take advantage of the off-season rates.

2. Think quiet. Another travel tip for the budget-minded is to consider destinations that are hot spots in the wintertime yet slow down to an easy going speed as the weather warms up, such as Lake Tahoe and Jackson Hole. These well-known ski areas offer an abundance of outdoor activities once the snow melts. You'll find hiking, biking, fishing and more without contending with the ski season crowd.

3. Think local. The hefty price per gallon of gas may create a barrier when considering a road trip, but short road trips can offer an affordable travel alternative. Consider checking out an area within a few hours drive that is known for a particular attraction, or head off the beaten path and try some camping, or head to a spa for a weekend of relaxation.

4. Think global. Wait a minute. Did we just move from thinking locally to thinking globally? Yes, international travel is not top-of-mind for a lot of U.S. citizens for a host of reasons, one being the struggling U.S. dollar. It hurts to think of exchanging a dollar bill in Europe only to receive half the value back in Euros. One way to avoid the exchange rate is to consider a European cruise since most travel costs are purchased in U.S. dollars up-front, thus minimizing the exchange rate loss.

5. Think out-of-the-box. Instead of spending hours in front of your computer drooling over exotic photos of that fancy Hawaiian resort only to want to vomit at the site of the hotel rates, consider alternative lodging options. For instance, check out rentals - whether it be a house, condo or an apartment. Spending less on lodging may mean you could stay longer...hmmm...Also, check airfare costs for varying routes that will get you to your desired destination. Instead of flying direct, you may find that booking two separate flights to reach your travel destination will save a lot of money.

I'm done thinking! I don't travel often. I want what I want. I don't want to skimp, but I have a budget to keep in mind. What to do? Find what you want and book it - you may just have to stay for a shorter amount of time to stay within your budget.

Style File: Sex and the (Plus Size) City

The film that fashionistas of all sizes have been waiting for has finally arrived. The long awaited Sex and the City film has opened nationwide. While most of the film critics are split on whether the film was well worth the four year wait since the HBO series ended, fashionistas have agreed across the board that the fashions in the film definitely receive four stars.

But what about plus size fashionistas? Can we truly look to Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha as icons for our fashion as well? The answer to that is a resounding YES, if you know what to look for. And unlike our four heroines with seemingly endless bank accounts that can afford closets full of Blahniks, Gucci and Dior, you can not only be stylish and sexy, but have a few dollars left in your Coach wristlet to have a round of Cosmos with the girls on a Friday night!
