Relationships: Plus Size E-dating Ain't Easy

BBW can’t find SM: Plus-size e-dating ain’t easy

Many plus-size singles say their weight can get in their way of finding love

NEW YORK - Each day, Match.com sends Christie Hyde five potential mates based on preferences in her profile — age, height, education, religion, smoking.

But then she reads "slender" or "athletic and toned" for their preferred body type.

She's a size 24.

"It literally happens every day on that site," said Hyde, 33, who works in public relations in Daytona Beach, Fla. "I am open on the sites about my size. I am who I am."

The dating show "More to Love" suggests that love comes in all shapes and sizes, but plus-size singles say their weight sometimes gets in the way of finding love online, even though two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese.

Cynthia Colby, 55, who works in multimedia marketing and promotions in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, said she tried eHarmony and Match.com with no luck.

"Either I was overlooked or I would sometimes get someone who didn't read the part where I said how heavy I was," said Colby. She included that she was a large woman (size 20) in her profile and posted photos, but typically when she reminded matches about her size, they'd say, "'Oh. I didn't know. That changes things.'"

Living It Up: 8 Steps to a Healthy Thanksgiving

8 Steps to a Healthy Thanksgiving
By Meri Raffetto

Sure, Thanksgiving is about eating that fabulous meal, but the good news is the traditional festive meal doesn't have to ruin your efforts towards a healthier lifestyle. Try the following tips to ensure a healthy and delicious thanksgiving day!

1. Add some pumpkin!
Pumpkin is a great food that we usually eat at Thanksgiving. A matter of fact, canned pumpkin is higher in vitamins than fresh pumpkin. Add pumpkin to soups, breads, or even mashed potatoes.

2. More veggies less bread
Make stuffing with less bread and add more onions, celery, vegetables, or fruits such as dried cranberries or apples. This simple step will add more health benefits and decrease some of the calories.

3. Decrease the fat in your gravy
Use a fat separator or refrigerate the pan juices and skim the fat off before making the gravy. This can save up to 55 grams of fat per cup (495 calories) and help you to avoid having greasy gravy.

4. Don't forget the veggies
Thanksgiving is such a great time to get in all of those wonderful fall veggies. Sweet potatoes, yams, squash, and green beans are a great way to add more vegetable side dishes.

5. Pies
What is thanksgiving without pie? All in moderation is what I say. If you don't have a preference, opt for pumpkin pie instead of pecan pie and save hundreds of calories.

6. Don't Rush!
Slow down, savor your food, and enjoy your family and friends. Give yourself a chance to feel full and satisfied. Remember, it isn't the last time you will eat these foods and you can always have more of the leftovers tomorrow.

7. Partake in some fun activities
Take a leisurely walk, go for a bike ride, or start a family tradition of playing touch football. Getting active will help you to burn more of the extra calories you ate during the day rather than storing those extra calories as fat. Get out and enjoy some movement.

8. Most importantly...
Thanksgiving comes once a year. Have fun sharing your thanksgiving meal and celebrating your family's traditions.

Style File: Shades of Gray

The fashionistas over at ShoppingTheTrend.com have highlighted the gray dress as as hot trend for Fall 2009:

If you follow celebrity trends, you will have spotted Cameron Diaz attending the 2009Teen Choice Awards in a fabulous pencil dress by Alexander McQueen. And Rene Zellweger appeared on Good Morning America wearing her designer of choice, Carolina Herrera. It's pretty obvious what these two celebs (and dresses!) have in common.. they're both elegant, sophisticated & gray in color.

This a trend brought on by the return of retro glam - a throwback to those stylish women spotted on Mad Men, a time when pencil skirts & little white gloves were au courant. The modern 2009 version is elegant, sure, but also a little more edgy.
There are plenty of options for plus size fashionistas looking to step out in style! Because gray is such a neutral color, we love the idea of pairing gray dresses with a bold pop of color--say some hot ankle booties with a bright colored tight? We've highlighted a few of our favorite dresses and look options, courtesy of ShopStyle.com!

Money Matters: The Frugal Thanksgiving

The Frugal Thanksgiving - 5 Ways to Save
By Jamie Jefferson

With all the food preparations and travel arrangements, Thanksgiving isn't cheap. Save some money on this year's festivities with the help of the following tips.

1. Watch the turkey sales.
Because the turkey is the most expensive part of the Thanksgiving meal, it makes sense to try to save money on it. Starting around Halloween, start keeping an eye on the price of turkey at your local supermarket so you know when to buy. Watch for sales, coupons or special free gifts from your supermarket. Some stores even offer a free turkey with a certain amount of groceries purchased on one trip. Take advantage of these deals to get your costs under $2 per pound.

2. Carefully weigh made-from-scratch foods against convenience foods.
It's a well-known fact that most convenience foods (canned, pre-packaged foods) are more expensive than foods that you can make from scratch. The biggest problem most people have with making dishes from scratch is the recipes and the prep time. Fortunately, there are hundreds of resources online that can teach you everything from making perfect mashed potatoes to making your own cranberry sauce. You can also make several items ahead of time, such as green bean casserole, and heat them up on the big day.

3. Decide on one "splurge" item.
If you're making everything from scratch, you might be too tired to enjoy the meal. Do yourself a favor and look for a good deal on an important store bought item, besides the turkey. Pie, cranberry sauce or stuffing are all good choices to help relieve some of the pressure off the cooking without breaking the bank.

4. Have everyone pitch in.
Just because you're hosting Thanksgiving dinner doesn't mean that you have to be responsible for the entire cost of the meal. Having a Thanksgiving potluck is very customary these days. Assign each person or family group something to bring and then concentrate your energy and your budget on the turkey.

5. Don't forget the train or bus line.
If you're traveling a distance to see family for Thanksgiving, driving may not be your best option. With gas prices still hovering around $3/gallon, you may be able to find a better deal on the train or bus line. Calculate how many miles are between your home and your destination. Then figure out how many miles to the gallon your car gets, and how much the price of gas is per gallon. Compare this figure to the local bus or train line to see if you can get a good deal with public transportation. As an added benefit, you'll have time to relax on you trip instead of fighting with traffic.

With planning, a new perspective and some research, you can spend a lot less this Thanksgiving. Look into cooking items from scratch and plan your travel expenses wisely to save the most money.

THIS JUST IN: Manik Magazine features new Anti-PETA "Save The Apology" Ad

Editor's Note: Kudos & Bravo to Selina Weeks and the Manik Magazine staff for an awesome and artistic piece of work that tells PETA that the plus community will not accept their tired apology after their insulting ad! -Ms. Aja B.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ManiK MAGAZINE Puts Ethics in Perspective with Anti-PETA “Save the Apology” Ad

New York, NY, 11/06/2009: ManiK Magazine released their direct response today to PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) continuous abuse of publicly humiliating advertising campaigns that make the plus-size community the “punch line” in efforts to promote vegetarianism as opposed to eating meat.

Appalled by PETA’s advertising campaigns that push for the ethical treatment of animals at the plus-size community’s expense, ManiK kicks off their themed: INNOVATIVE ACTIVIST premiere issue scheduled for December with their Anti-PETA Ad of a plus-size vixen in an implied nude shot draped in fur that reads, “SAVE THE APOLOGY, LOSE THE SARCASM – I’D RATHER GO NAKED TRIMMED IN FUR. STARRING NEW ACTIVISTS – PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ALL. ManiK MAGAZINE. http://www.manikmag.com/. STANDING FOR SOMETHING WHILE FALLING FOR NOTHING TAKES GREAT STRENGTH BUT YOU CAN BE BETTER AND DO BETTER. STOP INSULTING OTHERS TO PROMOTE YOUR AGENDA. GO ETHICAL FOR ALL!”

Manik Magazine founder, Selina Weekes, was outraged at PETA’s billboard posted in August 2009 in Jacksonville , Florida , that suggests overweight people are synonymous with whales and should lose the “blubber.” Rather than be a silent advocate for the oppressed, Manik Magazine is asking readers to get involved by posting their Anti-PETA ad as a default picture on their social networking sites for one week, starting November 16-21, to show solidarity for their interactive campaign to stand up against ostracism and ridicule from organizations that subliminally degrade fuller figures.

Toast to the Weekend: Hot Toddy

Here in NYC, it seems that everyone is walking around with the sniffles. The weather has been that of a typical NYC Fall--rainy and cold one day, warm and sunny the next. Mix that with all of the seasonal colds & flu going around, and at the end of the week, you are certain to feel like you just want to curl up on the couch with a warm blanket and something warm to drink.

This Hot Toddy is sure to warm you up from the inside out--and quickly if you don't sip slowly. While this allrecipes.com concotion calls for whiskey, you can substitute most "brown liquors" (I'm partial to spiced rum or some nice brandy myself...).

Keep warm, and have a delicious weekend!

Hot Toddy
(recipe courtesy Allrecipes.com)

Ingredients
1 teaspoon honey
2 fluid ounces boiling water
1 1/2 fluid ounces whiskey
3 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 slice lemon
1 pinch ground nutmeg

Directions
Pour the honey, boiling water, and whiskey into a mug. Spice it with the cloves and cinnamon, and put in the slice of lemon. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes so the flavors can mingle, then sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg before serving.

The Scene: Precious

NY Times Magazine Cover Featuring Precious star Gabby Sidibe.
Read the article
here.

This Friday, the film Precious, starring Mo'Nique, Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe, and a host of other celebs, opens in theaters. The film, produced by Oprah and Tyler Perry, received rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film festival, winning the Grand Jury prize, the Audience Award, and a Special JuryPrize for Acting for Mo'Nique. People have been talking about the trailer, about newcomer Gabby Sidibe, and the raw emotions that just watching the 2 minute 30 second trailer bring to the surface.

Many people have read the book "Push" by Sapphire, and as is usually the case with films based on novels, people are wary about whether they should check out the film. Some are calling the concept and theme of Precious "old" are saying that it "has been done before" based on the character played by Paula Patton (i.e. the teacher who truly cares coming in to save the day a la Michelle Pfifer's Dangerous Minds). Others are saying that it is a movie that must be supported and seen in the theaters because it shines light on mental illness, molestation and abuse.

Mo'Nique talks about the film in a great article by blogger Eric Kohn and talks about why Precious (which was still named after the novel at the time of the Sundance Festival) is a must see movie that should not be typecast because of its predominantly black cast:

"When you say, “It’s a black movie,” what makes it a black movie? Because we are all black people? When have you ever said, “It’s a white movie”? It’s just a movie. The moment we stop making that separation, it becomes a movie and the people just happen to be black, but it is so universal."- Mo'Nique

Are you going to see Precious when it hits theaters this weekend?

On The Go: BlackAtlas.com

On October 15, 2009, American Airlines launches BlackAtlas.com, a social media website that "offers travel insights from an African American perspective". Featuring video blogs from journalist Nelson George as their new "Traveler At Large", the site boasts of being the "premiere online destination for the African-American traveler."

Reviews of the website are mixed. Travel bloggers, like Steven Frischling of BoardingArea.com's Flying with Fish, do not see the need for the division:

"From the outset American Airlines’ Black Atlas social media site appears to play on certain stereotypical aspects of its targeted audience. The opening page of the pre-launch asks announces the new portal as “Your Passport to the Black Experience“ and asks, “Do you know where to find blues music in Moscow? How about a Jamaican restaurant in Milan? If you do, I want to know about it.” Delving deeper into American Airlines’ Black Atlas site, under the seven individual of categories of interest, along with Travel Tips, Restaurants, Arts & Museums there is also a listing for “Beauty & Barber Shops.”"

Critiques of the site say that most travelers, regardless of race, use travel as a reason to explore different culture, not seek out interpretations of their own. Check out this clip from the Launch Party and be your own judge. Would you check out BlackAtlas.com before taking your next vacation?

A Note From Ms. Aja B.: Back to Basics

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself,
instead of a second-rate version of somebody else"
~Judy Garland

Welcome to the 6th Anniversary of Belle-Noir.com! While I have tried to celebrate each of Belle-Noir's birthdays with some sort of flourish, none seems sweeter than this celebration.

November 2003. A time when print publications targeted to plus size women were folding. A time when you did a search on the web for plus size women or big beautiful women, the first results that were listed were that of adult porn websites. A time when even magazines that were supposed to be for women of Color seemed to neglect the fact that women of Color came in body sizes larger than a size 12. There were few--if any--blogs that were dedicated to showing love to plus size women. Fashion options for plus size women on line were limited to the usual suspects, with little in the way of fashion for those who wanted to be just as fashionable and in style as their thinner counterparts each season.

When Belle-Noir began as an e-zine on a Yahoo! Geocities website on November 1, 2003, it was a website I created in an effort to help my friends--and myself--have a place where we could turn to and find positive stories on plus size women of Color. I wanted Belle-Noir to be a place where up and coming designers could be featured right along with the major retailers, who were starting to get the idea that plus size women don't just want clothing that fits their curves; we want it to be stylish as well. Belle-Noir was going to be a website that featured plus size women who were entrepreneurs, top level executives, models, fashion designers, authors, journalists, work from home moms, stay at home moms--women who were living their best lives in a big and beautiful way. Our mission was to inspire, uplift, motivate, empower at a time when everything thing else on the Net relating to plus size women seemed to do everything but.

Turn the page to six years later. Plus size women are in the news, particularly when it comes to the fashion industry. There are online magazines, like Skorch, Gemini, Venus Diva and Plus Model Magazine, that all bring monthly content to plus size women looking to not only feel good, but look good! There are Full Figured Fashion Week events that are dedicated to making sure that fashions for full figured women are featured with just as much pomp, circumstance and flair as the shows in the tents in Byrant Park popping up in cities across the country. There are hundreds of bloggers who write about their likes, dislikes, when it comes to the plus fashion industry. Even Crain's New York Business is writing about the plus size fashion industry.

So where does Belle-Noir fit in with all of the changing times in the plus industry? As this change in the plus industry was taking place, Belle-Noir admittedly had its share of ups and downs. We switched formats several times. We gained writers. We lost writers. We had successful events, like Phat Poetry, a night of poetry that was for, by, and about plus size women and men. We launched a signature event, Curves & Cocktails, which was a socializing and shopping event created with the curvy woman in mind and at heart. But as the plus blogging scene began to grow, there was a need to keep up and keep current! We switched to a blog format for our newly dubbed Belle-Noir Magazine, but began to get lost in the shuffle.

We fell back on the stories that made us who were were--the Independent Woman column, Ask the Admirer--in an effort to keep up with other sites who were promoting fashion & beauty all the time. In short, Belle-Noir lost its voice.

Belle-Noir didn't start out as an "all fashion, all the time" website. And while we definitely want to bring the latest in plus size fashion to our readers both online and offline (i.e. Curves & Cocktails), there's got to be more. While we crave and covet that dress from the newest plus designer on the scene, who is telling her story? What inspired her to take that bold step and create her own line? What's more, did you know that her web designer and her publicist were also plus size women, making names for themselves in their respective industries?

This sixth anniversary of Belle-Noir.com marks the beginning of our "Back to Basics" initiative. We will definitely continue to follow the latest in plus fashion, but we also will go back to the root of what made Belle-Noir a successful and popular destination for plus size women in the first place. There are still stories to be told, and we intend to bring you a broad spectrum of what the plus community is all about. We will go back to featuring the entrepreneurs, the top level executives, the models, fashion designers, authors, journalists. We want to bring you the women behind the other sites you adore and let you get a glimpse into their lives outside of their blogs, online mags, websites. We're bringing back the Independent Woman of the Month, with the added bonus that at the end of one year, we will host an awards reception for the women you voted inspired you the most. Ask the Admirer is coming back as well. Even our beloved artwork from JNESS will be back (hence the homage to our 1st ever cover back in 2003 gracing our pages this month).

Mostly, we want to be the place where you can once again come to be inspired, uplifted, motivated and empowered as women.

To all of our dedicated fans, I thank you for your support for the past six years. The emails that you send, the comments that you leave are all received with love and gratitude. I hope that you will continue to let us know what you think about our new initiative. There are more ways than ever to get in touch with us. We are fully engrossed in the social media era--find us on Twitter, Facebook & yes even MySpace. Leave a comment on a post when it excites you--or even if it doesn't. Send us feedback via our Contact Us page. To quote former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, tell us "how we're doin'".

Welcome to the new--and not so new--Belle-Noir.com! Six years down--many more to go!

Peace & Love,
Ms. Aja B.
