The Scene: "Chelsea Settles"...Are You Watching?

Chelsea Settles airs at 10pm ET on MTV.
A few weeks ago, I told you about a new reality series coming to MTV entitled "Chelsea Settles". Since it's debut on October 11, the plus community is buzzing with commentary about the show and it's new heroine.
For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows 23 year old Chelsea Settles as she makes the decision to leave her family behind in Pittsburgh, PA  and move to Los Angeles to follow her dreams of working in the fashion industry. While the show begins with her worrying about her weight, it has, in just three epsisodes transformed to a show featuring a twenty-something young woman learning exactly who she is, and exactly how much she can do if she just believes in herself.

A lot of people have been trying to compare "Big Sexy" with "Chelsea Settles", and I am not sure I'm liking the idea of doing so. While both are shows about plus size women, I connected so much more with Chelsea Settles. When I watch her struggle with how people view her, when I see her crying because of people making fun of her, when I see her struggling with very difficult life decisions, I see so much of myself in her. I remember being the only plus size one of my friends in High School. While I myself cannot relate to wanting to be a model or working in thev plus modeling industry, I can relate to wondering if I am not getting a job because of my size.  I also, however, do think that while it is easy to paint a "oh, it's LA, and they won't hire anyone plus size to work in fashion retail out there" picture on the situation, I do agree with one sales associate when she said that Chelsea needs a bit more "polish". Going to an interview with black nail polish is a no-no that one learns with age and experience, and has nothing to do with size. Overall, it is refreshing to see a young woman going for her dreams, and even when she feels fearful of a situation, she pushes through it and does it anyway. Bravo for Chelsea!
Have you watched Chelsea Settles? What do you think of the show? If you are liking the show as much as  I am, be sure to like the offficial Chelesa Settles fan page on Facebook and let them know how you feel about the show. Check out this exclusive online clip, and be sure to tune in when Chelsea Settles airs on Tuesdays at 10pm ET on MTV.

The Scene: MTV's New Plus Size Reality Series--Chelsea Settles

Today on Facebook, I learned about a new reality series being produced by of all stations MTV called Chelsea Settles. It is a story about a 23 year old girl--Chelsea--who has dreams of working in the fashion industry. She is bubbly. She is beautiful.

And, to quote the doctor in the trailer for the show, she is "morbidly obese".

A lot of people are already comparing this show to the Style Network show "Ruby". Other than the shows both being reality series about plus size women, I will hold my judgement of the show until I watch the premire on October 11th. But already, I am loving Chelsea already--because I can relate to her. I've been in that doctor's office and heard the words "morbidly obese". I've walked down the street and heard all sorts of nasty and derrogatory insults being hurled my way. I've done the binge emotional eating after hearing said insults just to momentarily numb the hurt. But I also know those little moments of victory. And the moment at the end of the trailer (watch it and see what I'm talking about)? Those are what life is all about.

What I hope that  is "Chelsea Settles" will give other young plus size women a voice. I hope that it will encourage them to go for their dreams, regardless of what society tells them about what they can and cannot do because of their size. I pray it is not explotative. I pray the message it sends is to love the skin your in and to be healthy at whatever size you are. I am cautiously optimitic, however, because the show will be airing at 11pm. I know when I was a young girl--even an early teen--I had a bedtime well before 11pm. Maybe this is showing my age and teens stay up all hours of the night, but it makes me wonder what the real target audience is of this show?
Will you watch Chelsea Settles when it debuts in October? Peep the trailer here:

The Scene: TLC's "Big Sexy" Plus Fashion Reality Show

The talk of the online plus community is of the upcoming reality show "Big Sexy". Peep what the producers say about the show via their press release:

They are fabulous, fashion-forward and not afraid to show off their fuller figures. They are the ladies of TLC’s newest three-part series, BIG SEXY, which premieres on Tuesday, August 30 at 10:00 PM (ET/PT).

The Ladies of  TLC's "Big Sexy"
L to R: Nikki Gomez, Heather Roach, Audrey Curry, Leslie Medlik, Tiffany Bank.

The image-conscious industries of fashion and modeling are difficult to penetrate. With trends and looks that dominate the urban scenes, Americans have grown accustomed to perceptions of what is hip and forthcoming. BIG SEXY New Yorkers Leslie, Tiffany, Audrey, Nikki and Heather hope to expand and revise this commonly-accepted idea of what is beautiful and sexy – giving viewers a candid look into their lives as confident plus-size women who are shooting for the stars with their careers.

From designing clothing to booking modeling gigs, BIG SEXY will follow the ladies as they take over Manhattan to make plus-size sexiness more mainstream. Weight bias is notoriously rampant in their chosen industries, and it is their mission to prove that a bigger girl – the girl that most Americans can relate to — can break the mold and change the fashion and cultural norms that have restricted and rejected them for so long.

Each episode will feature the women as they attend major industry events, parties and opportunities, all while giving a candid peek into the balancing of their personal, dating and family relationships as plus-size women. They are big, they are beautiful, and they are not sitting at home waiting for life to happen. They know better than anyone that real women can be sexy with curves — no matter what society says.

BIG SEXY is produced for TLC by Atlas Media Corporation.

One thing I will say is that I am thinking that this will be a FAR cry from the FOX reality series "More to Love". These ladies look like they are fearless and full of confidence and style! I doubt there will be any "woe is me" moments. I have a bit more faith in TLC's ability to show plus size women in a positive light because I adore their show "Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss". Still...I remain cautiously optimistic.

Will you watch "Big Sexy" when it debuts on TLC on August 30th?

Kiss The Curves Hollywood UPDATE: Health & Wellness Added to Event Line-Up

Size acceptance is on the rise with the plethora of events dedicated to the plus-size community. Tracie Collins, Founder/Executive Producer of Kiss the Curves, LLC, a plus-size fashion event organization that features realistic models of all body types on the runway, has teamed up with The American Diabetes Association this year to not only continue to promote size acceptance in her runway shows but also health and wellness within minority communities.

Scheduled for March 18-20, 2011 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Kiss the Curves – Hollywood Kiss has successfully secured several noteworthy professional panelists to spearhead a discussion for March 18th on the growing epidemic of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes cases that are crippling the lifespan of women. The panel will discuss solutions that include remaining confident at any weight or size but understanding the importance of proper diet and exercise to live a healthier lifestyle and decrease the chances of being diagnosed with such illnesses. The panel will be hosted by Shay Moore from Atlanta’s People Station V-103 and include panelists such as Celebrity Chef and Flavor Caterer owner, Nikki Shaw, as seen on VH1’s show Basketball Wives and Valerie Lodeum from The American Diabetes Association’s subdivision Live Empowered, which is an initiative that provides outreach and educational efforts to African-Americans about diabetes.

The Scene: The "Add Plus Size Designer Collaborations to Target" Petition

Dear Belle-Noir Readers,

When I received the email from one of my favorite plus bloggers, Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, asking for the plus communities help in supporting and promoting a petition that she and two other popular bloggers (Patrice of Afrobella and Sarah from StyleIt Online) were circulating in an effort to get popular retailer Target to tart including Plus Size Designer Collaborations on their racks, I can admit I had mixed emotions. I completely GET why they feel the need for the petition. Why should those under a size 14 be the only ones to look forward to the latest trends at an affordable price each season? With designers like Donna Karan offering plus size looks in stores like Lane Bryant, why can't some of the designers working with Target extend their lines to include plus sizes (or, reach out to one of the popular plus designers like Monif C. or Igigi and invite them to create an exclusive line for Target)?

This is definitely one of those "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything" moments. As Marie mentioned on her blog, "closed mouths don't get fed". As a community, we must sand together on issues like this. I have signed the petition (#1017 and counting!), and encourage all of our Belle-Noir Readers to do the same.

Bravo to Marie, Patrice, & Sarah for taking a stand! I look forward to sharing your progress with our readers!

Peace & Love,
Ms. Aja B.

Facing Facts: ABC, Lane Bryant & The Double Standard

I am sure that by now you have heard about how ABC has refused to air a new Lane Bryant lingerie ad. According to an article in today's New York Post, ABC wanted to edit the ad and then air it in the last 10 minutes of Dancing with the Stars. Lane Bryant has since made a deal to air the commercial on Fox during American Idol next week and, according to an ad I received from Lane Bryant a few nights in May as well.

Have you seen the ad? If not, take a peek:

ABC, you have a lot of damn nerve. Please view exhibit A:
The above picture is of professional ballroom dancer Edyta Sliwinska and ABC Daytime soap star Cameron Matheson in their photo for when Cameron was on DWTS. Now, I personally *love* Edyta. I think she is an awesone dancer and she has a body that does.not.quit. And quite honestly, the costume she is wearing in the above picture is tame compared to the outfits that the DWTS wardrobe team drapes her in every week.

And that is exactly my point. ABC is fine with parading the professional dancers (and even some of the celebrities) on DWTS in little more than a nude colored bra and panty with sequins and fabric every season, but they do not want to air the Lane Bryant ad? Just last week, one of the professional dancers danced a rhumba in a black bra and panty set with a man's white dress shirt--open, mind you--for an audienece of millions on TV.

Hmmm....

The plus model in the Lane Bryant ad, Ashley Graham, is a size 16--a little over the size 14 that is supposed to be the size of  the average woman in America. Is it because she has a size 38D cup? Is it because Lane Bryant has the gaul to show a plus size woman in a sexy situation?

Even Wendy Williams, who I thought would have been all over ABC for not wanting to air the ad, tried to give the "as a mom, I'm not sure I want my kids to see that ad on TV" arguement on her show this morning. Huh? So then I guess you will be the first to say that Victoria's Secret ads should be pulled from ABC right now, right?

Do you think ABC is right for not wanting to air the ad? Is there a double standard at work here? Discuss...

THIS JUST IN: Manik Magazine features new Anti-PETA "Save The Apology" Ad

Editor's Note: Kudos & Bravo to Selina Weeks and the Manik Magazine staff for an awesome and artistic piece of work that tells PETA that the plus community will not accept their tired apology after their insulting ad! -Ms. Aja B.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ManiK MAGAZINE Puts Ethics in Perspective with Anti-PETA “Save the Apology” Ad

New York, NY, 11/06/2009: ManiK Magazine released their direct response today to PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) continuous abuse of publicly humiliating advertising campaigns that make the plus-size community the “punch line” in efforts to promote vegetarianism as opposed to eating meat.

Appalled by PETA’s advertising campaigns that push for the ethical treatment of animals at the plus-size community’s expense, ManiK kicks off their themed: INNOVATIVE ACTIVIST premiere issue scheduled for December with their Anti-PETA Ad of a plus-size vixen in an implied nude shot draped in fur that reads, “SAVE THE APOLOGY, LOSE THE SARCASM – I’D RATHER GO NAKED TRIMMED IN FUR. STARRING NEW ACTIVISTS – PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ALL. ManiK MAGAZINE. http://www.manikmag.com/. STANDING FOR SOMETHING WHILE FALLING FOR NOTHING TAKES GREAT STRENGTH BUT YOU CAN BE BETTER AND DO BETTER. STOP INSULTING OTHERS TO PROMOTE YOUR AGENDA. GO ETHICAL FOR ALL!”

Manik Magazine founder, Selina Weekes, was outraged at PETA’s billboard posted in August 2009 in Jacksonville , Florida , that suggests overweight people are synonymous with whales and should lose the “blubber.” Rather than be a silent advocate for the oppressed, Manik Magazine is asking readers to get involved by posting their Anti-PETA ad as a default picture on their social networking sites for one week, starting November 16-21, to show solidarity for their interactive campaign to stand up against ostracism and ridicule from organizations that subliminally degrade fuller figures.

The Scene: Precious

NY Times Magazine Cover Featuring Precious star Gabby Sidibe.
Read the article
here.

This Friday, the film Precious, starring Mo'Nique, Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe, and a host of other celebs, opens in theaters. The film, produced by Oprah and Tyler Perry, received rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film festival, winning the Grand Jury prize, the Audience Award, and a Special JuryPrize for Acting for Mo'Nique. People have been talking about the trailer, about newcomer Gabby Sidibe, and the raw emotions that just watching the 2 minute 30 second trailer bring to the surface.

Many people have read the book "Push" by Sapphire, and as is usually the case with films based on novels, people are wary about whether they should check out the film. Some are calling the concept and theme of Precious "old" are saying that it "has been done before" based on the character played by Paula Patton (i.e. the teacher who truly cares coming in to save the day a la Michelle Pfifer's Dangerous Minds). Others are saying that it is a movie that must be supported and seen in the theaters because it shines light on mental illness, molestation and abuse.

Mo'Nique talks about the film in a great article by blogger Eric Kohn and talks about why Precious (which was still named after the novel at the time of the Sundance Festival) is a must see movie that should not be typecast because of its predominantly black cast:

"When you say, “It’s a black movie,” what makes it a black movie? Because we are all black people? When have you ever said, “It’s a white movie”? It’s just a movie. The moment we stop making that separation, it becomes a movie and the people just happen to be black, but it is so universal."- Mo'Nique

Are you going to see Precious when it hits theaters this weekend?

The Scene: Sisters on The Small Screen

This week marked the debut of two new shows feature two fabulously funny women of Color! Monday marked the debut of the latest comedian to tackle a nighttime talk show, comedian Mo'Nique!

After successful hosting stints on the BET Awards, the cable network has dubbed Mo'Nique the "Queen of Late Night". Reviews have been mixed so far, which is to be expected since Mo'Nique's persona can be loud, outrageous, and larger than life. But it is definitely worth giving a shot.

Next up, comedian and "The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd debuted her new sitcom "Sherri". "'Sherri' centers around a newly single mom, paralegal and part-time comedienne/actress who tries to get back into the dating scene and move on with her life after divorcing her cheating husband. Sherri finds solace and support among her girlfriends at the office while juggling her hectic life." "Sherri" is in a sneak preview week on Lifetime this whole week at 7:00pm EST before moving to its regular time slot on Tuesdays at 10:00pm ET/PT.

Have you had a chance to check out either of these new shows? Do you think either of them will see a Season 2?

The Scene: Plus-Size Women, Reality TV: Is the Exposure Always Good?

'More to Love,' 'Dance Your A** Off' Expose Full-Figured Women,
Sometimes in Questionable Ways
By SHEILA MARIKAR (For ABCNews.com)

Watching a 33-year-old mom clad in a Catholic school girl's uniform gyrate her perhaps size 16 hips on a stripper pole begs many questions, but none (no pun intended) bigger than this: Why, and for what purpose?

The answer seems easy on the surface. The mom in question was, at the time, a contestant on "Dance Your A** Off," the Oxygen network's uber successful reality competition in which overweight contenders attempt to shimmy and shake off extra pounds. An amalgam of "The Biggest Loser" and "So You Think You Can Dance," "Dance Your A** Off" debuted on Oxygen in June, setting a network record of 1.3 million total viewers with its first episode.

Simple enough, right? She wanted to lose weight and reveled in doing it for the cameras; Oxygen figured out a formula to boost ratings.

But once you get beyond the superficial, figuring out the "why and for what purpose" can get more murky. The question doesn't just apply to "Dance Your A** Off," which, to be fair, features male and female contestants -- it goes for most of the small but growing genre of overweight-and- on-camera reality TV, notably "More to Love," the new FOX series in which full-figured women compete for the heart of a similarly hefty bachelor.

For Sally Ann Salsano, the executive producer of both shows, the goal is altruistic.

"These shows are about teaching you to be OK with yourself," she said. "That you don't have to be stick thin to find love or be healthy, and getting those things doesn't have to be a miserable process."

Others, like Samhita Mukhopadhyay, editor of the blog Feministing. com, wonder if audiences absorb a different message.

"These people put themselves on display in a way that viewers just eat up. Sometimes I cringe because it seems so humiliating for the person," she said. "It speaks to the general anxiety of fat women: You're a slob, you can't find love, you hate yourself."

It all boils down to the question of "fatsploitation" : Do shows like "More to Love," "Dance Your A** Off" and other similarly premised reality TV competitions exploit the size of their female contenders for entertainment value?

Here, the answers aren't simple at all. Take "More to Love": While on the one hand, it's refreshing to see, from a fairness perspective, that women who are not stick-thin size zeros can play the same courting games as their counterparts on "The Bachelor," listening to contenders in the introductory episode sniff and snivel, "I just want people to love me for me" and "I don't want to be alone, I really, really want to have that love story" makes them all seem pretty pathetic.

"There were a lot of tales. It was very weepy," Emme, the plus-size model who hosts "More to Love," conceded about the show's premiere. "But I think that's reflective of what's going on -- the frustration, the self-loathing. It's a travesty that women above a size 12 feel like they can't find love."

"I wish that there were more self-esteem- infused girls on the show. They are not reflective of all full-figured women," Emme added. "I can't wait to see the 'Bachelorette' version of this. I would love to see a very confident woman owning her curvaceous body and trying to find a wonderful guy."

The problem may be that until such a woman graces reality TV with her presence --former, feisty "America's Next Top Model" contestant Toccara Jones may be her closest cousin, though despite her curve confidence, she ended up on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp" shortly after the competition -- the market is flooded with full-figured females bemoaning their pant size and/or lack of dates.

To Feministing editor Mukhopadhyay, that perpetuates the impression that these women are to be pitied and fetishized for their size.

"On one level, it's good to have more images of larger women on TV because that act alone changes the way we look at people," she said. "But so many of them have low self-esteem, they're self-loathing, they talk about how no one loves them. It becomes this sort of spectacle. You really do wonder if all the stereotypes you've heard of fat people are true. On that level I do think it's exploitive."
